BREAST CANCER IN THE ERA OF COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected just about every
aspect of life, including screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care
for breast cancer. People who’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer and people
who are at high risk for breast cancer have found themselves in a uniquely
difficult and sometimes frightening position since the coronavirus crisis
began. The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) arises from the virus
SARS-CoV-2 which is similar to the original SARS virus. The most common
symptoms of the COVID-19 infection are fever, coughing and shortness of breath.
The primary mode of transmission for the COVID-19 virus is between people
through respiratory droplets and contact routes. The fatality rate of COVID-19
has been estimated at approximately 2 to 3%, but it varies dramatically for
different age groups and accompanying comorbidities like cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and hypertension.
Many guidelines have common points in approaching
breast cancer treatment, but patients are recommended to be evaluated on a
case-by-case basis. Unless a complication, such as an abscess, infection,
requires urgent treatment, surgery should be postponed for at least three
months due to atypia, prophylactic/risk-reducing surgery, and benign breast
disease. During the first couple of months of the pandemic, many hospitals
stopped performing breast reconstruction procedures. This was because public
health authorities recommended that elective (non-urgent) surgeries be
postponed, and breast reconstruction was considered to be elective surgery at
the time. Doctors are looking at each person’s unique situation and diagnosis
when deciding how to best move forward with breast cancer treatment during the
pandemic. Doctors are looking at whether a person has a higher risk of becoming
seriously ill from a COVID-19 infection due to a weakened immune system from
treatments such as chemotherapy or targeted therapy, or because of their age or
other health problems.

Overview of Breast Cancer: Breast Cancer Webinar 2021
#Breast #cancer is caused when normal cells in tissue start to grow and divide in an out of control manner. As they grow, the cells often, but not always, form a #tumor in the breast that can be detected in a #mammogram before it can be felt as a lump or thickening. It is important to note that not all lumps in the breast are #breastcancer, and not all breast cancers present with a #lump. However, all lumps or thickenings in the breast need medical attention to determine whether they are one of many benign lumps that can occur in the breast or are truly a #cancer. Breast cancer is not a single #disease; research evidence continues to indicate that there are several subtypes of breast cancer. They happen at varying rates in different groups and respond differently to treatments. Some are more aggressive than others and have very different long-term survival rates. Breast cancer can be diagnosed and treated while it is still a #early stage #cancer, before it spreads beyond the breast and through the #lymphatic system, offers the best possible #prognosis. Both Women & men with early stage breast cancer are often candidates for breast conserving #surgery, such as a #lumpectomy, and may not need to have #chemotherapy treatments.

COVID-19's Impact on Breast Cancer Care
The respiratory
illness commonly referred to as coronavirus and officially called COVID-19 has
changed life, COVID-19 viral pandemic responsible for the severe acute
respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) disease has dramatically
impacted management of patients in terms of diagnosis and surgical treatment of
cancer - including breast cancer. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) says that the risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 is low for
most people. However, it’s very important to know that people who are currently
diagnosed with cancer, including breast cancer, have a higher risk of severe
illness if they get COVID-19. Some breast cancer treatments including
chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy can weaken the immune
system and possibly cause lung problems. People who have weakened immune
systems or lung problems have a much higher risk of serious complications if
they become infected with this Corona virus. People with breast cancer that has
metastasized (spread) to the lungs also can have lung problems that may get
worse if they develop COVID-19. This higher risk for serious complications from
COVID-19 for people currently diagnosed with cancer likely is because having
cancer puts a strain on the body and also because certain treatments can cause
people to become immune compromised (have a weakened immune system) or have
lung problems. Some chemotherapy medicines and targeted therapies can also
cause lung problems, which could put people at higher risk for serious COVID-19
complications.
